Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a protocol used to automatically assign ip addresses, netmasks, gateways and DNS addresses to your computers, tablets, smartphones or IOTs on your network. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

In order for the devices in a network to connect to your network to communicate with other devices or to connect to the internet, some technical requirements such as below are required.

You can think of the IP addresses assigned to the devices in our network as our Country ID number. a device that provides a unique IP address that identifies the device, including when the network such as the ID number. This ip address is assigned to that device until the network connection is lost and is not assigned to any other device.

If the network connection is lost, the IP address is returned to the DHCP pool and held idle until another device joins your network.

DHCP is the name of the protocol that automatically assigns the technical requirements mentioned above to the devices included in the network.

Prior to the DHCP protocol, network administrators had to manually assign an IP address, gateway, and subnet mask for each device that would be included in their network. However, thanks to the DHCP protocol, the work of network administrators or IT experts has been made easier and the management of networks consisting of thousands of devices has been made much easier. Prior to the DHCP protocol, BOOTP (bootstrap protocol) was used, and DCHP and BOOTP protocol were developed, making it easier to connect network devices.

What is DHCP ?

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: The system that enables the DHCP protocol, which provides network devices such as IP address and gateway, to perform this process automatically, is called DHCP Server.

DHCP servers are available in many devices and operating systems such as firewall devices, XDSL modems, Smart Swichler, Windows or Linux Server operating systems.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is integrated into networks and controls which IP address devices receive what they can communicate over the internet. Usually, IP assignment is automatic, but familiarity with DHCP is important if you need static IPs.

Tasks of the DHCP Protocol

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: Although DHCP is generally known to have a dynamic ip address on the network to which the devices are connected, it has a much more advanced configuration structure.

Thanks to DHCP, your clients can obtain an IP address or use connection protocols and applications such as Proxy server settings or Gateway. In this way, proper network management can be ensured and many problems such as IP conflict problems on the network will be overcome.

Another technical feature communicated by DHCP servers is the default gateways we call Default Gateway. In this way, client computers learn from which device they can connect to the internet or communicate.

In this way, you can facilitate the management by directing the departments in your institution to different gateways. With the DHCP server, you automatically manage or route your client devices without making any settings.

Static IP Addresses

Static IP addresses are generally used in institutions, servers hosting websites, or similar large systems. The most important reason for its preference is that it is fixed and not variable. The IP addresses of assets such as our servers and websites we host on the internet must be fixed.

Otherwise, it would be very difficult for us to reach these servers and even it would be impossible when the IP address changed. When you want to enter a website, you are connected to the server of that website first. Your internet service provider guides you through the DNS servers by detecting the IP address of your web server.

Static IP addresses are used in many large or small structures such as VPN servers, FTP servers, DNS servers, corporate web servers, game servers. In this way, forwarding to fixed ip addresses is successfully done through your name servers.

Dynamic IP Addresses

Dynamic IP addresses vary according to static IP addresses. Every time you connect to the internet, a new ip address is defined on your computer.

When you disconnect from the internet, this IP address is assigned to another person. Your dynamic IP addresses can be automatically changed (without disconnection) by your service provider, even when surfing the Internet.

When you have a connection to the internet, you can learn this IP address via IP query sites or the interface of your internet modems. If your IP addresses are dynamic, they will change constantly. The same IP address is not defined to two people on the same network.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Internet service providers can use NAT technologies (for the purpose of saving) to allow many people to go on the internet via the same IP address. However, your local addresses at the service provider are unique and the same ip address is not defined to two people.

In order to do this process and save IP addresses, the technologies we call NAT are used. However, this does not apply to static ip addresses. Static IP addresses are unique and these IP addresses are defined and used in a single line without being given to two or more people at the same time. This is the most important difference between static and dynamic IP addresses.

Dynamic and Static IP usage in Firewall Devices

In firewall devices, you can distribute ip dynamically or statically to all computers in your internal network in general. This distribution process is set in the section specified as DHCP on your Firewall device. Using DHCP, you can distribute a fixed local ip (local ip) address to all your internal computers, tablets or phones. It is also possible to get information about which ip address in your internal network is defined to which computer or smartphone by logging in the KVKK compliance process.
